SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (IRN) — Demetra Demonte from Illinois is the new secretary of the Republican National Committee.
“We’ve got a big election coming up in 2012,” said DeMonte. “We’ve got a lot of work to do to get our country straight and being secretary I will be able to be part of the team that hopefully will help the party take the Senate and hopefully take back the White House. And I will be part of that leadership team.”
DeMonte beat out Dee Dee Benkie from Indiana. But she says she’s pleased Illinois has representation in the RNC.
“Obama’s home state now has the RNC secretary, and I think that is wonderful and it just shows that even though you are a blue state, that good red things can come from that: a Republican,” DeMonte said.
DeMonte said she attributes her selection to her hard work and her grassroots efforts
“It’s going to be an exciting two years and I’m going to work hard and hopefully work very very smart and hopefully we will prevail in 2012,” she said.
Among her duties will be taking the minutes, presiding over the Republican National Convention and calling roll for presidential and vice presidential nominations.
