ST. LOUIS (KMOX) — The Cardinals were successful in unloading Brendan Ryan as the shortstop was acquired by the Seattle Mariners on Sunday afternoon. The 28-year-old spent four seasons in St. Louis with his best season coming in 2009. However, after a disappointing 2010 performance at the plate and in the field, it was clear that Ryan did not fit in with the club’s future plans.
In return for Ryan, the Cardinals received 21-year-old pitching prospect Maikel Cleto. Last season, pitching for the High Desert Mavericks in High-A, Cleto threw 102.1 innings over 23 games, 21 of those being starts, striking out 7.3/9, walking 3.9/9, and a 6.16 ERA.
Ryan Theriot, acquired on November 30 from the Los Angeles Dodgers for pitcher Blake Hawksworth, will likely be the main candidate to replace Ryan at shortstop.
