ST. LOUIS–(KMOX)–The drug that Hannah Montana star Miley Cyrus claims she was smoking in a gotcha video taken at her 18th birthday party has already been banned in Missouri.

The drug salvia divinorum was outlawed by the Missouri legislature in 2005.   State Representative Scott Lipke of Cape Girardeau co-sponsored the law.   He’s worried the the Cyrus bong video will lure in new users for the dangerous hallucinogen.

“I think anytime you have someone of high visibility or notoriety,  such as that, kids can try to emulate those they put up on a pedestal,” Lipke said.

Possession of salvia in Missouri is punishable by up to seven years in prison and a $5,000 fine.

Smoke shops in Los Angeles were reporting customers coming in to request “that stuff that Miley was smoking.”   Meanwhile,  the Los-Angeles city council is considering a ban on the drug in the wake of the flap.
