MO, IL lose Congressional seats in census count
JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) __U.S. Census Bureau officials say Missouri and Illinois are among a handful of states that have lost a congressional seat.
That means the number of congressional seats in Illinois will now be 18 instead of 19. Missouri falls to 8 members in the U.S. House. That will be Missouri’s smallest federal delegation since the 1850 census. Missouri has had nine congressional districts since the 1980 census.
The Census Bureau on Tuesday released population estimates that will be used as the basis for redistricting. The losses of the seats in Illinois and Missouri were widely expected. Missouri had been on the bubble between holding its nine congressional districts and dropping by one.
The loss of a seat likely means that an incumbent federal lawmaker will be forced out of a job. That may be problematic for Democrats in Missouri because the Republican-led state Legislature will be in charge of drawing new congressional districts.
