Food stamp usage still high

ST. LOUIS (KMOX) – Food stamp participation in the St. Louis area saw a 12% increase in the last year.

That 12% increase is actually a smaller increase than the year before when participation jumped 24%.

Between 2007-2008 the increase in food stamp participation was 11%. Between 2008-2009 it was 23.6% and between 2009 and 2010 the increase was 12%

Scott Rowson with the Missouri Department of Social Services says you’ve heard part of this story for years now:

“As middle class families were effected by the economic downturn I think we have more of those folks” said Rowson.

Rowson says one in 6 1/2 Missourians are using food stamps.  Nationally that figure is one in 7.

But he has noticed somewhat of a slowdown.  He says nationally one-in-seven people use food stamps.  In Missouri that figure is one-in-six-and-a-half.

In St. Louis  35,000 people were using food stamps.  In 2010 that figure is 54,000.

To persons such as joe mama: it is not funny. the us govt claims that there is no inflation, yet food prices continue to go UP, gas goes up, electric and utilities go up. No social security COLA increase for 2 straight yrs. Why not get some Food Stamps, mama????? During the Bush era, the Wealthy just got wealthier and the middleclass got more poor.
