JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) — A St. Louis-area Republican has officially won a seat in the state Senate after a recount confirmed his victory.
The secretary of state’s office certified election results Wednesday that gave Republican John Lamping a narrow victory over Democrat Barbra Fraser. From the recount, Fraser narrowed her defeat from 133 votes to 126 votes. There were more than 61,000 votes cast in the race for state Senate District 24.
Missouri law allows losing candidates to request a recount if the gap is less than 1 percentage point. Fraser’s deficit had been less than 0.3 percentage points.
Lamping will be among 26 Republicans in the 34-member state Senate. The annual legislative session begins Jan.5.
