Gateway to Hope is a nonprofit organization that arranges medical and surgical treatment and hands-on care at no cost for individuals who have been diagnosed with breast cancer but cannot afford treatment. The organization recruits and secures doctors, hospitals and professional specialists in Missouri to donate their time, care and services. There is no cost to patients and families served by Gateway to Hope.

Currently, there are over 140 top professionals such as oncologists, breast cancer surgeons and reconstructive plastic surgeons, which help the organization accomplish its lifesaving goals. In addition to arranging everything from chemotherapy, radiation therapy, mastectomy and breast reconstruction, Gateway to Hope also arranges assistance at no cost for necessities and services such as childcare, transportation and gasoline, medication, bras, wigs, food, utilities and mortgage payments.

Gateway to Hope was founded in 2005 by reconstructive surgeon, Dr. David A. Caplin, and surgical oncologist, Dr. Marlys E. Schuh.  Saddened and frustrated at seeing breast cancer patients die or fade away from treatment because they were uninsured or didn’t have comprehensive health insurance to cover cancer treatment, Dr. Caplin came up with the idea for Gateway to Hope and asked his colleague Dr. Schuh to help co-found the organization.

The organization just celebrated its fifth anniversary and successfully treating its 160th patient. Gateway to Hope also refers hundreds and hundreds of individuals who have needs outside the realm of Gateway to Hope – 480 to date – to other medical facilities. Gateway to Hope never leaves anyone stranded!

Mission:

Gateway to Hope provides hope for what seems to be a hopeless situation! The organization gives uninsured or underinsured individuals with breast cancer a chance to receive treatment at no cost while keeping their families intact and watching their children grow. How People Can Help:

Referrals:
The most important thing people can do to help Gateway to Hope is to spread the word about the organization. If you have a friend or relative that has been diagnosed with breast cancer and that individual is uninsured or underinsured, please share our name and contact information.  Also, share our name, mission and services within your community.

Outreach:
Gateway to Hope spends a great deal of time working on community outreach. From church events to women’s groups, Gateway to Hope works year-round on sharing its mission and services to communities throughout Missouri. If you would like to assist with or suggest any outreach ideas, please call our office at 314-569-1113.

Fundraising:
While services and facilities are donated by our program partners, fundraising is necessary to allow our Program Nurse Managers to arrange patient care, to secure additional partners and providers, for health education, community outreach and program awareness initiatives as well as standard administrative expenses. Your support is critical. You can help by making a donation to our Annual Appeal. Please visit our website (www.gthstl.org) for more information.
