As important as it is to allow children to explore cross gender activities at this age, it is equally important for them to be able to identify the difference between male and female. This is an essential component of development. However, this identification does not have to be prejudiced in nature of how the child should behave, dress, etc; but simply to be able to identify the difference between genders. Another note I would like to emphasize is that most parents have only a limited range of knowledge regarding the current research in child development. This is not a criticism, but only to explain the many opinioned comments of the normality of “cross-gender-dressing”. Extensive hands-on experience coupled with education, is the only way to legitimately suggest a norm among children of this age. I have been a professional in the field of elementary education and administration for over ten years. I assure anyone questioning this behavior that this is indeed normal. However, this can be influenced one way or another by adults who often have very strong opinions based on their personal upbringing and knowledge. In conclusion, teaching a child the difference of gender and dictating their interpretation of these roles are two very different things. Be aware and cautious of the size of shoes you are wearing when stepping upon natural development.
