Troy, Ill. Man Jailed Without Bail in Effingham

EFFINGHAM, Ill. (AP) — A judge has denied bail for a Metro-East school board member charged with killing his father with a rock last year, as well as with the unrelated stabbings of a woman and her teen daughter.

Effingham County Associate Judge James Harvey ruled Friday that 46-year-old Gary Schmitt of Troy, Ill. poses a danger to others.

The Belleville News-Democrat reports that Schmitt can appeal the decision.

Schmitt is charged with murder, attempted murder and aggravated battery. He says God directed the stabbings.

Police who arrested Schmitt after the attack on Kimberly Joan Bourland and her daughter say he told them he killed his father by hitting him in the head with a rock.

Schmitt was elected to the Triad Unit 2 School Board in 2009. It’s not clear who he’s being represented by.
