The mission of JDRF is to find treat, cure and ultimately prevent diabetes, and they are the worldwide leader for research to cure type 1 diabetes.
Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease that strikes unexpectedly, can be fatal if not diagnosed and treated, leads to devastating complications (heart attack, stroke, kidney failure, amputations and blindness), and reduces life expectancy by 15 years.
Quite simply, diabetes causes the pancreas to cease functioning effectively. The pancreas is a vital organ needed to convert blood sugar into energy.
To stay alive, people with type 1 diabetes must take multiple insulin injections daily or continually infuse insulin through a pump. But insulin is a therapy, not a cure.
Half of all new cases of type 1 diabetes are diagnosed in people over the age of 18. JDRF offers the newly diagnosed adult the best support and information on techniques, equipment and treatments.
To date, JDRF has raised more than $1.5 billion for diabetes research and funds projects in 22 countries throughout the world.
