Fire Smolders Deep Below Bridgeton Landfill

BRIDGETON (KMOX) – There’s a fire, believed to be smoldering deep beneath a pile of trash in St. Louis County.

It’s about 100-to-150 feet below the surface, at the now-closed Bridgeton Sanitary Landfill.

“In one of the past fires that we’ve had at another facility, it’s something where there was smoke coming up,” Department of Natural Resouces spokesperson Renee’ Bungart said. “But eventually it just put itself out.”

Crews have closed off a ventilation pipe, hoping to starve the fire of oxygen.

Bungart said the fire poses no risk for neighbors.

The landfill is owned by Republic Services, and was taken out of service in 2004.
