ST. CHARLES (KMOX) - Francis Howell school board members say deciding to lay-off teachers is like having to choose a favorite child.
Regardless, their vote Thursday night was unanimous.
The cuts include about 65 teachers, and will plug $7.3 million of a $10 million budget hole. In total, approximately one hundred people face lay-offs, including administrators and support staff.
“There are some taxpayers that believe that we do not want to do any deficit spending whatsoever. There are other parents and students that love the programs we have and think that no cuts should be made under any circumstances,” Board of Education President Mike Sommer told KMOX.
“We know that down the road, once our local revenue sources come back, once state funding comes back, once county sales taxes come back, we’ll be able to look at what we’ve eliminated and determine what the priorities are — if anything — to bring back,” Sommer said.
In the short term, he stressed that class sizes would only grow by a few students.
