JACKSONVILLE, Ill. (AP) – A Morgan County judge says a 20-year-old Jacksonville woman who caused the death of an unborn child five years ago will have to serve 12 years in prison.
The Jacksonville Journal-Courier says Circuit Court Judge Richard Mitchell made the ruling against Kayla Francis on Thursday. Mitchell originally imposed the sentence on Francis in 2006, when she was 16 years old. She had admitted causing the death of an unborn child by running over a 16-year-old girl who was pregnant by a man Francis considered her boyfriend.
Mitchell told Francis she would not have to serve the adult portion of the sentence, so long as she did not violate conditions of her juvenile probation. But Mitchell concluded violated that probation by having contact with the unborn child’s mother.
