Great internview wtih Hugh Neff! Good luck to Hugh and his dog team in the upcoming Iditarod!!

  • E McDivitt

I am disappointed that such an unsuccessful musher keeps getting airplay. There are many more respected mushers who have endured the same conditions, helped one another, kept their dogs safe. Neff tried to summit Eagle more than 4x, exhausting his dogs, killing one. This is not representative of the best of the sport. The other musher who failed to summit was one who sacrificed his own position to help Neff. Neff was not alone on the quest. He met other teams at Dawson and met people at checkpoints. His decision to run alone was foolish and contrary to any code of the north. His claim that he doesn’t think much is obvious and he certainly doesn’t put his dogs first…his ego is way up front. And….still no word on what really happened to his dog on that summit or why he never sought help but another musher made the decision to seek help for him.

Hugh Neff don’t respect his dogs! I’m with E McDivitt.

I’m interested in hearing what your source of reference is with regard to the statements that Hugh Neff does take care of his dogs, among other things.
If you are making these types of statements I would like specific examples to back up your statements. Neff got through the first summit with luck and timing, and a musher nearly died on that first summit, causing another musher to bring him over and then one of his dogs died. I think other mushers tried a bunch of times on that first storm and turned back, yet you don’t comment about them. Neff got the hit on the second known bad summit at the time he hit it with one less dog, then another died. No other musher experienced that second storm because they were so far behind him and the storm cleared they came to it.
It sounds like you have a personal beef or vendetta with Neff from your comment. Do you know him? Do you have proof he mistreats his dogs?
What do you know that we don’t know?

  • Susan

I personally know Hugh and can tell you that he LOVES his dogs more that you can ever imagine. What happened to Geronimo has crushed him. His dogs are part of his family. How DARE YOU say that he does not care. Do you think it is wrong when Lance runs alone? I think not. Also, Hugh is not an unsuccessful musher! He has finished in the top ten of just about every race he has been in. It does sound like you have a personal vendetta against Hugh and it is a shame that you have to bring it out in public. This Quest was one of the most brutal in history due to the massive storms. 80+ mph winds at -50! Just ask Hans Gatt or Brent Sass, who also lost a dog in this race. When Hugh tried to climb Eagle Summit he only tried twice on his own. He tried again with Dan. He did not exhaust his dogs. When the dogs wanted to turn around, because the wind was so bad, he turned around and brought them back down to safety. His team did not have either of their leaders – Annie or Walter – because Hugh takes such good care of them that he left Annie home, due to a little frostbite from an earlier race, and he dropped Walter after going through waist deep overflow. Walter probably could have gone on but because Hugh loves his dogs so much he left him behind! If you are going to “trash talk” another person at least get your facts straight.

  • Susan

    P. S. This radio station, most likely, interviewed Hugh because is from Chicago!!

  • Rachel Cehert

    Well Said

  • Michael

Thanks for putting things straight, Susan. The internet would be such a great platform for discussions and exchanging ideas if it wasn’t ruined by such uninformed comments.

  • Tracie

Can I add my two cents to Susan’s very informed post …. that I heard the audio of Dan Kaduce telling Hugh @ Eagle Summit that he was wearing his wind jacket and had left his parka at Slavin’s. I’m guessing that played a big part in Dan’s decision to seek assistance at the checkpoint and that it wasn’t all about Hugh, Dan didn’t wanted to freeze!

  • MONICA NEFF

ABSOLUTLY, it was not all about Hugh, Dan left his coat at a earlier checkpoin.t
E.McDivittt-how come ur not bashing on him for his i”poor judgement”. HOW DARE U CRITICIZE HUGH AS MISTREATREATING HIS DOGS..YOU SIT THERE IN UR CHAIR WATCHING FROM UR LAPTOP….I WAS THERE… I WENT THRU THE -35 TO -40 IN FAIRBANKS TEMPS & THAT WAS WARMER THAN WHAT HUGH WENT THRU…YOU HAVE ABSOLUTLY NOOOO IDEA OF WHAT HAPPENED ON THE SUMMITT. IT IS A PERSONNEL MATTER B-TWEEN HUGH & TAMRA..IF YOU ARE SO BLOOD THIRSTY FOR INFO, THEN GO TO THE SOURCE… SEND HUGH A MESSAGE ON HIS SITE & ASK HIM WHAT HAPPENED.. YOU MIGHT BE A FAN OF THESE RACES, BUT THAT DOESNT GIVE YOU THE RIGHT TO DEMAND ANSWERS OR TO MAKE FALSE STATEMENTS BASED ON SPECULATION & NOT ANY TRUE FACTS……HUGH WAS NOT THE ONLY 1 IN TROUBLE… GET YOUR FACTS STRAIGHT–UNSUCESSFUL MUSHER U SAY,, ID LKE TO SEE U GET UR BUTT UP ON THE MOUNTAIN & TRY TO ENDURE WHAT THESE GUYS/GALS GO THRU………..MONICA NEFF—HUGHS OLDER SISTER…

I didn’t watch the game (as usual). An ex-football player said the Colts were the most right wing team in the NFL. They lost. So, from that vrsepectipe the right team won. If you go with red state vs. blue state, the blue state team (from Indiana) lost.

  • Praveen

You are right, of course. There was only ONE Andy Rooney. Having just seen that ieinrvtew not all that long ago, I was very surprised and not at all ready to hear that we had lost him. He was terrific.
