JEFFERSON CITY, MO. (KMOX) – Governor Jay Nixon has ordered an audit of the Monarch Fire Protection District.

State Auditor Tom Schweich had requested the audit after hearing allegations of misspending in the district.

The Monarch Fire District serves West St. Louis County and Chesterfield.

Monarch Fire Protection District Treasurer Kim Evans told KMOX News that legal fees have been too high in her opinion: “A half million dollars in 2009 and a quarter million dollars in 2010.”  Evans told KMOX News.

“If there is a misappropriation of money then we  need to let the taxpayers know.” said Evans.
