ST. LOUIS (KMOX)- Boeing’s big tanker contract win Thursday means over a thousand jobs and tens of millions of dollars in economic impact for the St. Louis region.
That’s according to Boeing Defense, Space and Security CEO Dennis Muilenburg who says they’ll be doing some of the early engineering work in St. Louis creating a wide variety of positions both within Boeing and at its suppliers, “Over the next few months we’ll be rolling out the details of that. We expect the supply chain work here will span the breadth of the program.
“Some will include engineering jobs up front. Some of that will include manufacturing at the component and major assembly level, those will span electronics, structure, software.”
Muilenburg says that since it is a startup program many of the jobs will be new and will last a while, “We’ll deliver the first 18 tankers through 2017, then we’ll deliver a total of 179 tankers at roughly a rate of 15 a year, so this is a program that will last for more than a decade.” He says there are also foreign deal possibilities and tanker fleets are usually used for decades.
Muilenberg says the project will create 50 thousand jobs nationwide.
