MO A.G. Koster Out With List of Most Common Scams
JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (KMOX) – And the #1 scam perpetrated on the people of Missouri last year involved…DEBT COLLECTIONS!
Missouri Attorney General Chris Koster is out with a list of the most common scams, based on consumer complaints to his office throughout 2010.
He says more than 2,200 residents complained about being constantly harassed by debt collection agencies, often for debts they didn’t even owe.
Other callers told the AG’s office that callers were abusive, threatening and called repeatedly at all hours.
The rest of the Top 10 Missouri scams, in order, are:
Credit and Debit cards
Mortgages and Foreclosures
Home Repair and Remodeling
Lotteries and Sweepstakes
Pre-Need Burial Plans
Cable and Satellite Services
& Automobile Warranties and Service Contracts
AG Koster said receiving more than a half-dozen complaints per day about debt collectors shows that many of those agencies cross the line.
“Even though you may be responsible for the debt the collectors are calling about, there are federal laws governing just how far the debt collector can go,” Koster said. “Your best protection against harassing and abusive calls from debt collectors is to know your rights.
