CHICAGO, ILL.(AP)-St. Louis-based Save-A-Lot is expanding much to the delight of Chicago Mayor-elect Rahm Emanuel. Thursday, Emanuel applauded Save-A-Lot for opening five new grocery stores in neighborhoods identified as food deserts. A food desert is a neighborhood without easy access to a main-stream grocery store. An estimated 600,000 Chicagoans live in food deserts without access to fruits and vegetables. Emanuel says he is committed to reducing that number.
The new stores have also created up to 150 new jobs.
