SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) - Illinois State Police are trying to figure out who vandalized a Martin Luther King Jr. statue with yellow paintballs near the Illinois Statehouse.
Illinois Secretary of State Jesse White calls last week’s vandalism “reprehensible.”
White says no other statue or structure in the Capitol complex was damaged.
He says the King statue has been cleaned and sustained no permanent damage.
White says Illinois and the country owe the late civil-rights leader a debt of gratitude and that “his memory should always be cherished and celebrated.”
