WASHINGTON (KMOX)-The Federal Emergency Management Agency is now admitting that, even though they don’t meet their standards, the metro-east’s levees do actually exist!
FEMA Administrator Craig Fugate announced today that instead of pretending that substandard levees don’t exist, the agency will rate their protection levels.
Southwestern Illinois Flood Prevention District Council executive Les Sterman says the decision only makes sense, “Clearly, we have a system of levees that’s protected this area for 70 years and have served us very well. We think it affords lots of protection and that should be reflected on the maps.”
Sterman says the decision will buy the region at least a few more months before the new maps that determine flood insurance requirements are implemented.
