St. Louis Office Had Prior Excessive Force Accusations

ST. LOUIS (AP) — St. Louis police officer Dustin Ries, who was taken off patrol after a video showed him beating a man on New Year’s Day, has been accused of excessive force for an incident in 2006.

Forty-three-year-old Michael A. Reitz of St. Charles County sued Ries, the Board of Police Commissioners and a company that operates Big Bang, a piano bar in Laclede’s Landing.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports Thursday that it’s the third time Ries has been sued for excessive force.

Rietz’s attorney, Joseph Dulle, says Ries slammed Reitz against a wall and jumped on his back while arresting him at Big Bang in August 2006. Charges of trespassing and resisting arrest were later dropped against Reitz.

A police spokeswoman and Ries’ attorney declined comment until the investigation is complete.
