Election Returns

COLLINSVILLE, Ill. (KMOX) — The 86th season at Fairmount Park kicks off Tuesday but the real race isn’t on the track.

It’s in the state legislature where President and General Manager of Fairmount Brian Zander wants lawmakers to know that with two thousand people Fairmont is the largest employer in Madison County.

“We want to just be competitive with race tracks in places like Indiana and Iowa,” Zander said.

Those tracks offer slot machines at their facilities attracting bigger names.

The latest bills to add slot machines at Illinois horse tracks died in January. Zander is hopeful Chicago’s newly elected mayor will push for gambling expansion at the tracks there and that Fairmount will be included.

Fairmount Park has 75 dates this year with average purse awards of $4,000. However purse awards are up to three times higher at Indiana tracks.
