St. Louis Police Warn of Bail Scam

ST. LOUIS, Mo. (KMOX) – If you get a call that a loved one’s in jail and needs money, beware.

The St. Louis Police Department says it may be a scam.

Officials say an elderly woman was contacted by a caller who said he was a public defender.  The victim says the caller identified a relative and said she needed to wire transfer 4-thousand dollars for their release.  She later learned the call was false.

Police say they’ve received another similar complaint, but in that case the victim caught on to the scam before sending money.

Officials say public defenders would never ask for money directly and that courts don’t request bail money by wire transfer.
