WASHINGTON, M0 (KMOX)- Franklin County authorities are still looking for the man who was allegedly operating a meth lab, along with an unlicensed daycare, in Washington, Missouri.
Sheriff’s Department Detective Sgt. Jason Grellner tells KMOX five children were in the house in the 1600 block of East 3rd Parkway when police knocked on the door Friday. He says the male suspect’s wife answered the door, “She was holding what is commonly referred to as a ‘snort straw’ and a lighter and methamphetamine powder was actually located in the office of the home daycare center.
“When we arrived they (the children) were down, I guess, for nap time.”
Grellner says the owners would cook the meth in a basement garage, next to the basement room where they operated the daycare. He says they had the garage ventilated, but that may not have protected the children, “any of these chemicals leach out through the walls, through doorways, windows, into other portions of the property” he says. “ Our obvious fear is for the welfare of the children that were being cared for there.”
Grellner says the five that were three Friday were checked out and appeared to be fine. But he says no one really knows how exposure to such chemicals affects children in the long run.
Grellner says the day care watched as many as 11 children.
