St. Louis County Cities Weigh Census Challenges

Michael Calhoun

CLAYTON (KMOX) – Cities within St. Louis County are considering their options for challenging the most recent Census numbers.

County Chief Operating Officer Garry Earls tells KMOX that the most obvious reason would be a street being attributed to the wrong city.

He adds that a challenge just isn’t worth it for the Florissants and Chesterfields out there.

“But a municipality of, say, only a thousand people – which there are quite a few in that thousand-person range – it would make a substantial difference to them to challenge twenty or thirty folks in the count,” Earls said.

That difference comes in a town’s share of the county’s one-percent sales tax.

“Every month, the distribution of dollars from that county-wide sales tax will be based on this most-recent Census, one its implemented.

Earls stresses that there will be no challenge from St. Louis County itself, of its 1.7-percent population decline.
