Feds Probe Ill. Work Comp at State Agencies

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) __ Federal prosecutors are investigating the workers’ compensation system at Illinois state agencies after
disclosures that more than half the staff at a prison collected nearly $10 million for injuries in just three years.

The Associated Press obtained five subpoenas from U.S. attorneys in the central and southern districts. The subpoenas demanded
injury-claim data and five years’ of e-mail and personnel records for Workers’ Compensation Commission arbitrators and other state
employees.

The Belleville News-Democrat reported in December that 389 Menard Correctional Center employees have received nearly $10
million in workers’ comp claims since 2008.

The AP also obtained subpoenas issued by the state Insurance Department for Corrections Department records.
Federal and state officials would not comment or did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
