Opening Day Memories from a Daughter of a Baseball Player
ST. LOUIS, Mo. (KMOX) — As you prepare for opening day festivities, imagine that your preparation is highlighted by the fact that your father is a well-known baseball player.
That was the case for Pat Shannon-VanMatre, the third oldest child of now Cardinals broadcaster Mike Shannon.
Pat says even though she was three at the time, she can still recount the 1964 world series, “I remember the crowds and the excitement around my house during that time.”
Pat says when she got a little older, around seven or eight she still didn’t really understand how blessed she was, “I use to think my friends were lucky because not only did they not have to go to work with their dad, they didn’t even know what their dad did for a living,” remembers Pat.
However, there was one perk that Pat enjoyed even as a child.
When asked what was her favorite memory, Pat said, its hard to choose one, but her parents taking the kids out of school to go to Florida for spring training.
Pat is now owner of Mike Shannon’s Steaks and Seafood.
