SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) — Illinois emergency officials want residents to know how to stay safe if there’s a major earthquake in the state.

The Illinois Emergency Management Agency is marking April as Earthquake Preparedness Month. The department says the nearly 60,000 Illinois residents have already registered to participate in an earthquake drill. It’s April 28 and called “The Great Central U.S. ShakeOut.”

It’s a multi-state event and more than 1.6 million people are registered to take part. Schools, businesses, government agencies and families can register.

IEMA director Jonathon Monken says Illinoisans should be earthquake-aware because the New Madrid and Wabash Valley seismic zones are in the southern part of the state.
