St. Louis Ranks Last for Men’s Health

Fred Bodimer

ST. LOUIS (KMOX) – St. Louis finds itself at the very bottom of another lifestyle list.

Men’s Health Magazine is out with its annual list of the best cities for men in terms of health, fitness and overall quality of life. Madison, Wisconsin is number one, Fargo, North Dakota is number two. Plano, Texas, Burlington, Vermont and San Jose, California round out the top five.

Way down at the bottom – the VERY bottom – at number 100, is St. Louis. The editors of Men’s Health broke the rankings down to three categories — health, we’re 98th… fitness, we’re 97th…and quality of life….number 74.  Add them up and those numbers put St. Louis at the bottom of the list.

Joining the Gateway City in the basement: Memphis, TN (#96), Detroit, MI (#97), Birmingham, AL, (#99) and Philadelphia, PA (#99).

This is because we have one of the few Charter Cities in the Country. Which means the 61 square miles of the City is also County. The rest of the country has health departments that are almost always County wide and include vast amounts of their suburbs along with their central cities. This is just one of countless examples of how our City/County separation hurts our region. These false perceptions of our region have real effects on our ability to compete for residents, tourism and jobs.
