SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — St. Louis Cardinals cleanup hitter Matt Holliday hopes to return to the lineup for Sunday’s series finale at San Francisco.
Holliday underwent an appendectomy April 1.
Manager Tony La Russa wasn’t quite ready to commit to starting Holliday yet, but did say he could pinch-hit Saturday night against the Giants. The Cardinals said their slugger got through Friday’s workout at AT&T Park pain-free and without any setbacks.
Holliday has played in only one game this season, going 3 for 4 with a home run in the team’s season-opening loss to San Diego.
