Missouri Adds 24K New Jobs in March

JEFFERSON CITY (KMOX) –  The dark clouds that have been hanging over the economy the past couple of years continue to part, but Missouri’s not in the clear just yet.

First the good news…jobless numbers for March are out and John Fougere with the Missouri Department of Economic Development says the state added more than 24,000  jobs last month.

“What we try to do, we look at trends,” Fougere explained to KMOX News.  “And when you take a look at the fact that this is two out of the first three months in 2011 where we had significant job growth, I think overall it’s positive movement.”

Still, unemployment in Missouri continues to top 9%.

“It’s not where we want it to be,” Fougere admitted.  “But we’ve been pretty much in the state of Missouri between 9.3% and 9.6% for about fifteen or sixteen months straight, so dipping down to 9.1% is a positive direction.”

The St. Louis metropolitan area gained more than 13,000 jobs last month, with “noticeable growth” in construction, retail and wholesale trade, and business services.
