Layoffs Hit St. Louis Fire Department

Kevin Killeen

ST. LOUIS, Mo. (KMOX) — As expected,  layoff notices went out today for 30 St. Louis firefighters.

Based on seniority, the layoffs are scheduled to take effect April 20th — two days before a federal grant that would allow them to be rehired is expected to be “officially announced.”

Firefighters Union Local 73 President Chris Molitor says it’s his understanding that once the $3.2 million grant is announced, all 30 firefighters will be called back to service.

  1. I feel sorry for the city firemen says:

St Louis may have been approved to get the fire grant, to rehire those laid off, but these guys are about to discover the harsh reality that funding of the grant in the senate is a whole different story all together. especially with all the new first responder grant budget cuts coming out to prevent the closing of the federal government next week.

  2. no SAFER grant anymore? says:

unfortunately we in st louis will never see the safer grant with obama’s new cuts to first responders that we were awarded. hope somebody has the heart to tell those guys theyre not coming back
