Storm Damage may Lower Property Taxes

Megan Lynch

CLAYTON, Mo. (KMOX) – If your home took a hit from Friday’s storms, you may at least be able to get a break on your property taxes this year.

In St. Louis County there’s a special provision for victims of natural disaster.

“If your home has been destroyed, if it’s uninhabitable, then we’re only going to assess you on the value of your land.  If part of your property was destroyed we can reduce it on a pro-rate basis,” explains County Assessor Jake Zimmerman.

Zimmerman says assessors will be driving around trying to identify damaged properties, but he says it’s important to call to make sure you’re on the list to be considered for an assessment adjustment this year.

The number is 314-615-4230.
