ST. LOUIS (KMOX)- If you commit a crime with a gun in the city of St. Louis, you’re going to have to come up with a lot more money to get out of jail while awaiting trial.

Circuit Judge Jack Garvey is increasing the cash bond suspects have to post to gain their release, from as little as $3,000 to $30,000 to $50,000!

Garvey tells KMOX something has to be done to get gun-toting criminals off the streets, “The volume, right now, of guns on the street, in just talking to police, is just mind-boggling.”

Garvey isn’t sure what impact the change will have, but he believes it will help,  “These guys, even though they are carrying guns and could be involved in these shootings, they have families that love them. They’re the ones who are exposing and risking their accumulated capital to get these guys out. So yes, some are making those bonds, but it will be more difficult now.”

Garvey says he believes there’s enough room in jail, to hold more suspects for a longer period of time.
