BELLEVILLE, Ill. (AP) — A June sentencing hearing is scheduled for a man who admits killing a teenager in a gang-related fight outside a basketball game at a southwestern Illinois high school in 2009.
The Belleville News-Democrat reports that 21-year-old Reginald Coleman of Cahokia pleaded guilty Wednesday in St. Clair County Circuit Court.
Authorities say Coleman shot and killed 17-year-old rival gang member LaShane Whitley outside a Cahokia High School girls’ basketball game.
Prosecutors say Coleman fired the fatal shot after being circled by eight gang members. He was the only one with a gun.
Coleman originally was charged with first-degree murder, but that charge was reduced as part of a plea deal.
Prosecutors plan to seek a 20-year prison term when Coleman is sentenced June 29.
