JOPLIN, Mo. (KMOX) – Don’t just head to Joplin for the holiday weekend, hoping to help with tornado cleanup efforts.

“I know stories of people pretty much becoming disaster tourists, because they come down to help and cannot be put to work immediately. They mill around the different areas and end up becoming kind of a problem,” says Brent Beshore, a Joplin native and businessman in Columbia, Missouri.

Beshore spearheaded a $1 million fundraising telethon for United Way Joplin storm relief, Thursday night, in central Missouri.

He was a guest on KMOX’s Hancock and Kelley Show, Friday morning.

Beshore says people who want to contibute money to the relief fund may do so by calling 573-443-4523, visiting www.uwheartmo.org , or texting JOPLIN to 864833.

He says those wishing to volunteer in Joplin should call 2-1-1 or  visiting www.211missouri.org .
