Bluff Collapses in Metro-East

ALTON, Ill. (KMOX) – Officials say a bluff collapse within 20 feet of a stately Alton home overlooking the Mississippi River appears stable for now, but they’re keeping an eye on it.

“I’ve never seen a slide or a cave-in of this magnitude in may career of 20-plus years,” Alton fire chief Greg Bock tells KMOX News.

Bock says the collapse on Shelly Street is about a foot wide, a hundred feet deep, and it took out a six-to-eight inch water main, “One of the neighbors called and said they had no water. The water company sent a service truck out to find out why. Long story short, they found this gaping hole.”

Bock says IDOT helped the fire department clear the tons of mud that slid onto the River Road, the bike trail, and the Piasa Park entrance below.
