ST. LOUIS (KMOX) — The Cardinals announced that they have purchased the contract of infielder Matt Carpenter from Memphis AAA and recalled first baseman Mark Hamilton.

The team also announced that they have optioned pitcher Maikel Cleto to Springfield AA and infielder Pete Kozma to Memphis AAA.

Carpenter, 25, who made a strong showing in spring training, was batting .283 with two home runs and 23 RBI in 52 games at Memphis while collecting 39 walks and a .421 on-base pct. The left-handed hitting infielder was batting .305 in May. He has been assigned uniform #19.

Hamilton, 26, appeared in 16 games for the Cardinals earlier this season, batting .200. He went on a tear at Memphis after being sent down on May 19, batting .452 in 12 games with 5 doubles, one homer, 14 RBI and a .643 slugging pct. He wears uniform #38.
