ST. LOUIS (KMOX) – A “Heat Advisory” remains in effect for the St. Louis area through at least Wednesday evening.

The National Weather Service says an advisory is issued whenever temperatures and humidity make it feel like 100 degrees for a string of four days or more.

Heat-related illnesses are a real threat, especially for small children, the elderly, and others with health conditions.

Meteorologists say several days of heat indexes around 100 are just as dangerous as one or two days of more extreme heat.

People in the St. Louis area can get information about cooling centers or energy assistance by calling the United Way at 1-800-427-4426 or 2-1-1 from a landline phone.

The number for the Cool Down St. Louis charity is 314-241-7668.

Tips for beating the heat include: staying in air conditioned areas as much as possible, drink plenty of clear liquids, and wear light-colored clothing outdoors.
