EAST ST. LOUIS, Ill. (AP) — The emergency room at Kenneth Hall Regional Hospital in East St. Louis is closing.
Starting early Tuesday, patients needing emergency medical attention are advised to go to Touchette Regional Hospital’s Emergency Department in Centreville.
Last month, the Illinois Health Facilities and Services Review Board approved the closing of the only hospital in East St. Louis. The Southern Illinois Healthcare Foundation sought to close the hospital, which consisted of the emergency room and 39 mental health beds, because it was losing money.
Leaders of other hospitals worry the closure of the East St. Louis hospital will worsen the area’s shortage of beds for psychiatric patients.
The foundation is transferring 12 of the psychiatric beds at Kenneth Hall to the Centreville hospital.
