Former Inmate Defrauds Local University

ST. LOUIS, Mo. (KMOX) – A former South Carolina inmate has pleaded guilty to bilking Webster University out of thousands in financial aid.

The US Attorneys Office says 35-year-old Michelle Owens created nearly two dozen false applications using the names of correctional inmates.  Prosecutors say after the university approved the distance learning applications, it would create the financial aid packages.

Owens received pre-paid debit cards that investigators learned she used for more than a hundred thousand dollars in personal expenses.  She faces twenty years in prison and fines.
