Residents Peek at Proposed “South County Connector” Routes
AFFTON (KMOX) – Mixed feelings, on a proposal to run a multi-lane expressway through the heart of south St. Louis County.
An open house Tuesday on the “South County Connector” brought visions of bulldozers for many.
“Really, they’re talking about destroying a lot of homes,” was one remark.
County officials are trying to provide an easy way to breeze from mid-to-south County.
“Nobody wants an interstate in their backyard,” a Webster Groves resident said.
“It’s not a highway. We’re talking about something like Forest Park Parkway,” County spokesman Dave Wrone said Monday. “Nothing has been decided. There has been no final determination and we’re still very early in the process.”
A southward extension of I-170 was soundly defeated in the 1990s.
There are five proposed routes for the new road: some cut through homes, others through empty strip malls. A proposal involving the empty Deer Creek strip mall and the River Des Peres seemed to popular among attendees.
“That to me would be the better area,” said a Shrewsbury resident concerned about a highway cutting his city in half. That said, he added, “it seems like the County is saying ‘let’s spend some money.'”
Another open house is slated for Thursday night, 4-to-7 p.m., at the Shrewsbury City Center.
