SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) — Gov. Pat Quinn has asked the head of the Illinois State Police to review allegations of racial bias in the department’s handling of searches during traffic stops.

The move comes one week after the American Civil Liberties Union filed a complaint with the U.S. Department of Justice. The ACLU says the state police have done nothing about a pattern of asking minority drivers to submit to vehicle searches more often than white drivers.

The state police deny any bias and defend the search requests as a valuable law-enforcement tool.

But Quinn spokesman Grant Klinzman said Tuesday that the Democratic governor has asked the state police director to review the issue.
