CHESTER, Ill. (AP) — A southwestern Illinois boy is on the mend after authorities say he was accidentally shot in a leg by another 12-year-old boy.
Randolph County investigators tell KFVS-TV in Cape Girardeau, Mo., that the shooting happened Sunday in an outbuilding in an unincorporated area near Chester where the boys found an unsecured .22-caliber rifle.
The injured boy was taken to a St. Louis hospital and released the next day.
Sheriff Mike Hoelscher urges parents to keep all firearms locked up and away from children or secure all firearms with gunlocks.
The department has gun locks publicly available for free Monday through Friday.
