ST. LOUIS, Mo. (KMOX) - Jiffy Lube no longer automatically recommends oil changes after 3,000 miles, but that doesn’t mean it’s a bad idea.

KMOX Auto Show host Greg Damon said that while newer cars using synthetic oil do not need their oil changed as often, there are other factors to take into account. While Jiffy Lube will adhere to guidelines in the owner’s manual, Damon says the manual is not always correct.

“That doesn’t take into consideration what the temperature is outside,” Damon said. “It doesn’t take into consideration the starting and stopping, and everything else — the dust that’s outside, the windspeed or anything else.”

Damon said factors like these can shorten the time span between oil changes, and if not taken into account will gum up the engine. He said the 3,000 mile rule still works well for most cars, and though synthetic oil will extend that period, it also costs twice as much.
