The Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences says that next year there may be 10 pictures nominated for best film, but maybe not.
The Academy has announced that a film must receive at least 5% of the best film votes to be eligible to be nominated in that category. This means that next year, there may be 10 films nominated, or 5, or some number in-between.
The expansion to ten nominees in the best picture category two years ago has been controversial among Academy members. This action is seen as an effort to make the films nominated in that category more qualified for that selection. There are about 6,000 voting members in this category in the Academy.
