City Neighborhood Struggles to Recover from New Year’s Eve Twister

Kevin Killeen

ST. LOUIS–(KMOX)–You’ve heard of the Sunset Hills tornado, but have you heard of Lewis Place?

Six months after it too was struck by the New Year’s Eve tornado,  the north St. Louis neighborhood still has some 20 families displaced from their homes, and about 150 homes showing damage.

Lewis place Disaster Recovery Coordinator Cheryl Pointer says it’s been a long, slow rebuild.

“Little by little, house by house, we will restore a house at a time,” Pointer said, “But it’s very heartbreaking.”

Pointer says only about 20-percent of the homeowners had insurance.   Mayor Slay is seeking a million dollars in relief money to help Lewis place rebuild.  Half of the money would come from the city and half from the state.

A vote on the proposal is planned in the city’s board of Estimate and Apportionment Wednesday.
