Thousands Crowd Downtown for ‘Idol’ Auditions

ST. LOUIS (KMOX) — Downtown St. Louis has been transformed into a national talent show, as a crowd of music hopefuls – 10,000 strong by some estimates – surged in from across the Midwest for a shot at making it on ‘American Idol.’

St. Louis is the first of seven cities to hold open auditions this summer for Season 11 of the reality TV singing competition. Hopeful singers and wanna-be stars were asked to preregister Sunday to guarantee a slot in line at the Scottrade Center – and 5-thousand showed up to secure a wristband, despite the pouring rain.

But now, the crowd has grown far beyond that number. Organizers told KMOX their headcount totalled approximately 10,000 people, many of whom arrived before 5am.

If you are driving downtown this morning, avoid Market from 14th to Tucker, which have been closed for the auditions – the 14th street ramp from I-64/40 is also shutdown.
