Developer to Tear Down AAA Building, Replace with CVS

Michael Calhoun

ST. LOUIS (KMOX) – The city’s Planning Commission voted Wednesday night to approve tearing-down the AAA building on Lindell in the Central West End.

It’s replacement will be a CVS Pharmacy.

“Another drugstore is not a benefit to our city. It’s not going to entice anybody to move back to a city that’s losing thousands and thousands of people,” but preserving historic and iconic architecture will attract people, editor Alex Ihnen says.

Developers originally planned to build on a free spot just a block away, until they discovered they could get more from the Alderman who represents the AAA site.

“There’s no city-wide planning. We’re acting as 28 separate little towns, and a developer can shop around until he finds a town that lets him do whatever he wants,” Ihnen explains.

He cites it as an example of why a serious discussion should be held on reducing the number of aldermen.
