St. LOUIS, Mo (KMOX) – Missourians still outweigh Illinois residents — according to a new nationwide report.
Illinois has an adult obesity rate of 27.7 percent — making it the 23rd most obese state in the nation.
Rich Hamburg, head of Trust for America’s Health, says “one of the things that is particularly troubling in Illinois is that the rate for teens places it at the fourth highest.”
Broken down by gender, the biggest differences can be seen between black and white women. In Illinois, nearly 43 percent of black women are obese…compared to 23 percent of white women. In Missouri, there’s a 41 percent obesity rate for black women, 28 percent for white women.
Missouri, meanwhile, has an adult obesity rate of 30.3 percent — landing it just outside of the top ten of most obese states — at number 11. A big contributing factor there, Hamburg says, is the high level of physical inactivity in the state.
